The School Bestiary

illustrations for a fantasy book for children

written by Martina Macháčová

The School Bestiary (Školní Bestiář) is a fantasy story about two children to whom strange and inexplicable things start happening at school. The story connects ordinary reality with a fairy-tale world inhabited by goblins, a dragon and a witch. Moving along the boundary between reality and imagination was something I felt very close to in this book, and I wanted it to be visible in the illustrations too. I drew inspiration from a street-art workshop where I learned to work with spray paint. In the illustrations I then combined realistic drawing in coloured pencil with abstract textured areas made with sprays. Through this contrast I tried to reinforce the impression of a disturbed, fairy-tale-bent reality.

For the book I designed the character and environment illustrations, the cover and the colour concept, and also the small line illustrations of the mother and the children that appear alongside the text and show the reader who is telling the story at that moment. I had complete creative freedom in the work, and the author’s only wish was that the illustrations should not feel dark but should keep their colour and playfulness.
