illustrations for The Hound of the Baskervilles
I made this set of illustrations for the book The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle. What drew me in most was its powerful atmosphere of moors, bogs and fast-rolling fog. So I turned my attention to the landscape, which is a strong motif in the story and is described in it again and again.
In the illustrations I captured the changeability of the weather: rain, wind, grey days, the shifts of light across the landscape at daybreak and at dusk, or moonlight at night. Some of the prints rest on nothing but a soft grey breath of fog; others work with the contrast of light glinting off the marshes, or with the silhouettes of trees.
For the printmaking technique I chose lithography, and explored as wide a range of its possibilities as I could, from drawing through to engraving. What I enjoyed most was working with relief and with intaglio from stone. I used different processes in the individual illustrations, and their differing visual character helped me capture the atmosphere of the landscape more precisely.
