The first public space project I made was back in high school, when a few classmates and I painted the underpass in Ústí nad Orlicí. That was the first time I traded my room, where the work happens in private, for a space that crowds of people walk through every day. All at once my paintings were in dialogue with people hurrying for a train, heading home, going to school or to work. Over time I came to see that art in public space should not be merely a visual embellishment, but an important part of the everyday life of the people who live there. It should turn ordinary, often overlooked places into cultural points that bring people together, strengthen their bond with the community and help shape local identity. Art can bring out the character of a place, recall its values and offer people the chance to form a personal relationship with it. That is where I see the greatest contribution of art in public space. Not in decorating a place, but in giving it new meaning and offering people a reason to stop for a moment and look around.
