Not just trains

A series of illustrations for the town’s cups

for the town of Česká Třebová
2022

For the town of Česká Třebová I created three illustrations to be printed on drinks cups. Česká Třebová is historically associated above all with the railway, and when I talked at university with classmates from different parts of the country, I found that if they had heard of the town at all, it was usually in connection with trains and the railway. So in the illustrations I wanted to show that the town today offers more than just its railway history — which I nonetheless still see as an important part of its identity.

I linked each theme with the motif of the railway and played with text and rhyme. The illustrations show sport, culture and nature, but the individual motifs also refer to trains: the ice-hockey player, for example, has carriages instead of skates. In this way I wanted to make a witty connection between the town’s railway history and its life today, and to capture the other places and activities the town has to offer.

I drew the illustrations by hand in ink and pen, then converted them to vector and prepared them for print. As a supporting colour to black I chose red, which along with black is one of the main colours of the town’s coat of arms.
