Illustrations of forest animals in the children’s department
For the new municipal library building in Česká Třebová, besides the space wallpapers I also designed illustrations for the glass doors and windows of the children’s department. Its theme is the forest, and my task was to create window graphics that would give children a greater sense of privacy without closing the space off or blocking daylight. At the same time I saw the illustrations as an opportunity to introduce children to the world of animals and nature in a playful way.
I did not want to draw the animals as cute little characters, but tried to keep their real proportions and character. So that from an early age children build up a picture of what the animals living around us actually look like. At the same time I used a simple handwriting that is close to their age and leaves room for their own imagination. It was just as important to me that small stories should arise between the animals. Children can then work out for themselves why the bear might be carrying a snail, who the fox is waiting for, or why the black stork has nested just here. That way they can watch the relationships between animals and get to know the species that live here in the Czech Republic.
The challenge for me was to find a balance between the playfulness of the illustrations, my own personal handwriting and the stylised interior, which had already been designed architecturally. I wanted to create a greater sense of privacy for parents with children, but without closing the space off or overwhelming it visually. The window graphics therefore work as a filter between the corridor and the children’s department. They let light through, keep the space open, and at the same time create more privacy. I matched the colours of the whole project to the interior architecture, so that the illustrations would not feel like something added on but like a natural part of the space.
